Lawrence, T.E. & McCance, William. PRECIOUS CASKETS. the friendship between T.E. Lawrence & William McCance; West Yorkshire (UK), The Fleece Press 2003: This intriguing story of the friendship between the wood-engraver, painter and typographer William McCance and the celebrated T.E. Lawrence falls neatly into two chronological halves. In 1926 Lawrence asked his friend to go round the London binding houses to assess their interest in, and capacity for binding copies of his forthcoming book, which became the legendary "Seven Pillars of Wisdom". McCance willingly did so, and made brief entries in a notebook which survives and has not been seen before, it is included here in its entirety. The friendship, full recounted by Richard Knowles, lay dormant after this until McCance's time as typographer at the Gregynog Press, when he invited Lawrence to become involved with their production of Sir Robert Vansittart's "The Singing Caravan". Lawrence declined but remained interested. McCance's correspondence with Vansittart, unpublished previously, is included, and will be of interest to Gregynog historians and collectors for the light thrown on the book's creation. One wood engraving designed by William McCance and engraved by his wife Agnes Miller Parker, will be printed in the book. There will also be a number of tipped-in photographs and illustrations of some of the finished bindings of "Seven Pillars of Wisdom". Bound in marbled paper made by Enrico Ricciardi, there will be approximately 72 pages and it will be a 270 copy edition. ["E" Item/Not in O'Brien] Retails at £92.00 EDITION SOLD OUT.

Stang, Charles M. (ed.). THE WAKING DREAM OF T.E. LAWRENCE. Essays on His Life, Literature, and Legacy; NY, Palgrave / St. Martin's Press 2002: FIRST EDITION IN DUSTJACKET, 8vo, black boards, 184pp, list of contributors, Introduction: "The Many Ways of T.E. Lawrence" by Charles M. Stang, index, NEW/NEW. ** Since the end of the First World War, the legend of "Lawrence of Arabia" has enjoyed a place in the popular imagination of the West. Behind the legend, however, is a man, Thomas Edward Lawrence, whose life and art reflect the modern consciousness and the war that indelibly marked it. This volume addresses what has been overlooked by the legend and illuminates the legacy of T.E. Lawrence's presence in the 20th century. Contributors explore Lawrence's relation to other major writers, the colonial and postcolonial implications of his link with Arabia, his sexuality, and his status as cultural icon. Contains... Chapter I: "I had had one craving..." by Theoharis Constantine Theoharis, "Does Not Care: Lawrence, Herodotus, and Nietzsche on History" by Charles M. Stang, "T.E. Lawrence and Historical Representation" by James Gelvin, "Reflective Heroes: Self-Integration through Poetry in T.E. Lawrence and Homer's Odysseus" by Maren Cohn, "Lawrence's Odyssey: A 'Prosaic' Approach to Greatness" by Stephanie Nelson & Maren Cohn, "T.E. Lawrence and the Shaws" by Jonathan Hart, and "T.E. Orlans, Harold. T.E. LAWRENCE: Biography of a Broken Hero; Jefferson (NC), McFarland 2002: FIRST EDITION, pictorial softcover, 25.3 x 17.8cm, 293pp, b&w frontis photo portrait by Howard Coster, introduction, chronology of Lawrence's life, Prologue: A Rocket Flared and Fell, map (Lawrence's Homes and Sations in Britain), 12 b&w photos & illus., notes, bibliography, index, NEW. ** Lawrence of Arabia is viewed as a man of great talents, performing striking feats of bravery, leadership, and will and also as a masochist, who hated and despised himself. This biography comes closer than any other to explaining why Lawrence forsook public life and a colonel's rank for the life of a private in the Royal Air Force. This balanced study of a man whose character and achievements have been much debated is based on a review of virtually every published and unpublished English source in British and U.S. libraries and archives, including the important archive of Lawrence's letters and papers in the Bodleian Library. Part I discusses Lawrence's life in a conventional chronological sequence. Part II is devoted to enduring themes: his living and spending habits; his relations with family members and friends; and the elements of genius and madness, honesty and evasiveness, vanity and humility, and masochism, in his nature. Laid in is a bookmark INSCRIBED BY THE AUTHOR. ["E" Item/Not in O'Brien] ISBN: 0786413077 Retails @ $39.95 NOTE: I have copies in stock.

Bruce, Anthony. THE LAST CRUSADE. The Palestine Campaign in the First World War; London, John Murray 2002: dustjacket, 8vo, maroon boards, 299pp, preface, 31 b&w photos, 6 maps, notes, bibliography, index. ** Surprisingly, this is the first full account of the First World War in Palestine since the official history published in the 1920s. Yet it was a tough and fast-moving campaign, fought against a formidable enemy in difficult conditions and sometimes stupefying heat. Its highpoints -- T.E. Lawrence's capture of Aqaba with a charge of Arab horsemen, and Allenby's ceremonial victory march through the walled city of Jerusalem with fighters overhead and volleys of machine-gun fire in the streets -- are classic moments in the history of warfare but there is more that is equally gripping: the Battles of Gaza were among the most hard-fought, and the Battle of Megiddo among the most brilliant and decisive, victories of the entire First World War. Anthony Bruce has produced a comprehensive and fascinating military history of the campaign, drawing on a wide range of sources including the words of those who took part. He is also alive to its political aftermath, including the collapse of the Ottoman Empire and the Arabs' sense of abandonment following the Balfour Declaration. The implications of these are still with us today. By the author of 'An Illustrated Companion to the First World War' (London, Michael Joseph 1989). References to T.E. Lawrence. Hamilton, Jill (Dutchess of Hamilton). FIRST TO DAMASCUS. The Story of the Australian Light Horse and Lawrence of Arabia; East Roseville, New South Wales (Australia), Kangaroo Press 2002: 8vo, pictorial softcover in thick wraps and foldover flyleaves, 230pp, map, 14 b&w photos, bibliography, index. ** In 1918, 12,000 Australian Light Horsemen advanced across the Middle East, covering nearly 450 miles of treacherous desert and mountains. After twelve days the 'Great Ride' climaxed in the taking of the fabled city of Damascus. The Ride was praised by the Allies' Chief of Staff Earl Wavell as 'the greatest exploit in the history of horsed cavalry...'. Few people today have heard of the Great Ride, let alone remember it as the last triumph using massed cavalry. What most people remember is Lawrence of Arabia's version - that it was this romanticised figure who virtually single-handed led the Arab troops to victory and took Damascus in the name and authority of Arab army chief Prince Feisal. The truth is different. Jill Hamilton tells how Damascus was defended by the same Turkish general who had blocked the Australians at Gallipoli in 1915, and how for many of the troops, the taking of Damascus was a 'getting even' for that defeat. She describes the courage, endurance and mateship that made the desert crossing possible, and pays homage to the deep and important bond between horse and rider that enabled so many men and animals to survive. Also includes details of the author's father's experiences as a trooper with the 10th Light Horse, and the role of Lawrence of Arabia in the victory. Tabachnick, Stephen E. FIERCER THAN TIGERS: The Life and Works of Rex Warner; Michigan State University Press 2002: cloth, 6"x 9", 416 pages, Photos, Notes, Index. ISBN 0-87013-552-x. ** Rex Warner was considered a literary legend in the 1930s and 1940s. His works remain powerful reflections on the turbulent politics of the New Deal and WWII period. As Warner grew increasingly disillusioned with the modern world, his writing interests turned to ancient times via myth retelling, translations, and historical novels. Fiercer Than Tigers explores the composition, reception, and significance of Rex Warner's work, as well as his personal life, his friendships with C. Day Lewis and W.H. Auden, and contemporary Greek writers, his intellectual journeys and political beliefs. His most noteworthy writing includes his translation of Thucydides' The Peloponnesian War, which sold nearly one million copies, his historical novels The Young Caesar, Imperial Caesar, Pericles the Athenian and The Converts, original fiction including The Wild Goose Chase, The Professor, and The Aerodrome, and the translation that contributed to poet George Seferis' winning of the Nobel Prize. Tabachnick's personal acquaintance with Rex Warner, his access to unpublished sources in repositories and private hands across the United States, Greece, and England, and his many interviews with Warner's former friends, colleagues, students and relatives, provide a firm basis for his presentation of the life events that influenced Warner's works. Fiercer Than Tigers offers a straightforward, accurate, and balanced account of the life and career of an unjustly neglected writer while it illuminates the historical period through which he passed. In this meticulously researched and annotated biography, Tabachnick demonstrates that, while Warner was not the leading writer of his generation, he was a representative figure in the split between his classical and Victorian heritage and the pull toward socialism, in his shift from leftist idealism to liberal humanism, in his wide network of friends and almost as wide a network of literary jobs --in fact, that Warner was "one of the last representatives of the old Victorian literary ethos...." Fiercer Than Tigers is thus not only a portrait of the man but a look from the inside at the ways that a whole literary generation, and not just the Auden group, thought, felt, and earned their livings. ~Robert Murray Davis, author of Evelyn Waugh and The Forms of His Time. [There are eleven index entries on T.E. Lawrence. It has been claimed that The Mint influenced Warner's best novel, The Aerodrome and that Warner liked Lawrence's work. Also, there is a lot about C. Day-Lewis, who was Warner's best friend, and whose career was really launched when Lawrence praised his poetry.] Published @ $37.95 NOTE: I usually have copies in stock.

Lean, Sandra & Chattington, Barry. DAVID LEAN. An Intimate Portrait; London, Andre Deutsch 2001: 1st in dj, large square 8vo, boards, 240pp., introduction by Sandra Lean, foreword by Omar Sharif, profusely illustrated with b&w and color photos and b&w and color illustrations, index. ** Lean's first taste of directing came with Noel Coward on the wartime classic "In Which We Serve". It was the launch of a monumental directorial career. Fifteen further films followed, from "This Happy Breed" to "A Passage to India", which among them garnered a phenomenal fifty-seven Academy Award nominations, winning twenty-eight. He twice received the award for best director, first for "A Bridge on the River Kwai" and then for a film that is still as popular as it was on its release, "Lawrence of Arabia". In this individual, yet objective account of David Lean's life and work, his wife, Sandra Lean, and Barry Chattington shed light on the many aspects of the director's personality. Filled with the often poignant memories of Sandra Lean it is a fascinating portrait of a flawed yet hugely talented and inspirational director. ["F" Item/Not in O'Brien] NOTE: Copies in stock.

Norman, Dr. A. T.E. LAWRENCE. Unravelling the Enigma; West Yorkshire (UK), Central Publishing Ltd. (c.2001): paperback, 227pp, 24 b&w photos & illus., 5 maps. ** From the author's Prologue: "As I stood looking down at the effigy of Thomas Edward Lawrence in the Church of St. Martin's, Wareham, I was struck by the sensitivity captured in the stone face. Something within me connected with this man who had left so many myths behind him when he died dramatically in a motor cycle accident in 1935. I decided to make a journey into the past, and try and find out what feeling may have driven this man to take up the sort of life he did. ...the overriding question in my mind was why, after his heroic exploits in the war, he suddenly chose to shun all though of further advancement and instead decided to live in anonymity and obscurity in the lower ranks of the armed forces. As I became absorbed in his personality, I realised that the only true way to find out about him was not by reading books others had written on him, but by reading first hand what he had written about himself. If I could only approach his own letters, and his writings - Seven Pillars of Wisdom and The Mint - with an open mind, then somewhere within these works would be locked the 'inner man' - the loyal, honourable, justice-seeking Lawrence with all the hurts and traumas which he tried so desperately to hide and which affected his personal life so deeply. There was also one other way in which I might be able to reach the 'inner' Lawrence, and that was to investigate his interaction with the many fascinating friends and acquaintances that he had gathered around him through his short but intense life. I would like to invite all who share an interest in Lawrence now to accompany me on this journey to find 'the inner man." ["E" Item/Not in O'Brien] NOTE: I usually have copies in stock.

Stevens, David. THE WATERS OF BABYLON. A Novel of Lawrence After Arabia NY, Simon & Schuster 2000: 1st in dj, 8vo, hardcover, 318pp, afterword, new. ** On page 9 is reproduced a letter from Will Lawrence to T.E. dated 10 Sep. 1915. The author, who wrote the screenplay for the Oscar-nominated Breaker Morant, has written brilliantly imagined and elegantly written novel that speculates on the enigmatic life of the legendary T.E. Lawrence following his retreat from celebrity as Lawrence of Arabia. Following his brief but shining moment in the spotlight of public consciousness, Lawrence attempted a retreat into anonymity, abandoning his celebrity and joining the Royal Air Force - not as a ranking officer, as would have been his due, but as a regular airman, an erk. This much of Lawrence's story David Stevens knows to be fact, because Stevens's father spent time in the RAF with Lawrence (whom he disliked). Using his father's recollections as a springboard, and employing extensive research, Stevens has crafted an amazingly rich and detailed novel about he life Lawrence may very well have led during his years as a soldier, and after. The book is a fascinating, multi layered portrait of a remarkable, complex man who became a legend in his own lifetime -- and who spent the rest of that life trying to escape his own fame. Caton, Steven Charles. LAWRENCE OF ARABIA: A Film's Anthropology Berkeley, University of California Press 1999: no dj as issued), 8vo, cloth, 306pp, 25 b&w photos, 1 line figure, notes, bibliography, index. ** "Having read his multilayered critique of Lean's epic masterpiece, we'll now be viewing our old favorite with new insight and appreciation." (L. Robert Morris & Lawrence Raskin, co-authors of Lawrence of Arabia: The 30th Anniversary Pictorial History). Combining ethnography, film criticism, and his extensive knowledge of the Middle East, Steven C. Caton presents an innovative and fascinating examination of the classic film, "Lawrence of Arabia". Caton is interested in why this epic film has been so compelling for so many people for more than three decades. In seeking an answer he draws from situations in his own life, biographies of the film's key participants, and analyses of issues relating to class, gender, colonialism, and cultural differences. The result is a many-prismed book that poses important questions of ethnographic representation and the discourse of power. It will also enrich anyone's view of Lawrence of Arabia, whether for the first or the fifteenth time. Caton's approach is dialectical, and his readings of the film are situated within different historical periods, from the early 1960s to the present. Among the subjects he highlights are travel and colonialism in fieldwork and filmmaking, orientalism in the representation of the Other, and the film's ambiguous handling of masculinity and homosexuality. Caton looks at his own reactions to the film at various stages in his life and offers a thought-provoking account of the film's reception by today's high school and college students. Steven C. Caton is Professor of Modern Arab Society in the Department of Anthropology at Harvard University and the author of Peaks of Yemen I Summon: Poetry as Cultural Practice in a North Yemeni Tribe (California 1990). The plan was sound, even though the execution of it betrays all the usual bunglings of a beginner." At the end, the book is dated "1965 - 1972". Brown, Malcolm. THE IMPERIAL WAR MUSEUM BOOK OF 1918. Year of Victory; London, Sidgwick & Jackson in Association with the Imperial War Museum 1998: dustjacket, large 8vo, blue boards, 25 b&w photos & illus., 2 maps, notes & references, bibliography, 2 indices. ** Laid in is a bookmark INSCRIBED BY THE AUTHOR. Published on the 80th anniversary of the Armistice. It tells the story of a year which, Malcolm argues, has been unduly neglected in favour of its more famous predecessors. Yet the casualty lists were longer in 1918 and at one time there was a serious fear that Britain might have to evacuate her troops from the continent and that the war would be lost. This is the author's fourth book in the Imperial War Museum series; preceded by The First World War (1991), The Western Front (1993) and The Somme (1996). The Legend of Colonel Richard Meinertzhagen; NY, St. Martin's Press 1998: dj, small 8vo, black paper covered boards, gilt, 295pp, b&w photos, 7 maps, bibliography, index. ** Col. Richard Meinertzhagen was one of those rare men whom fate always seems to cast in the dramas that shape history. As a young officer, he served in India and Africa during the glory days of the British Empire, defending the crown's dominions and exploring its darkest reaches. His exploits in the bloody colonial war of turn-of-the-century East Africa earned him a reputation as one of the most fierce and ruthless soldiers in the Empire, yet it was during those years spent roaming the silent places of the Serengeti, hunting its game and learning its secrets, that Meinertzhagen developed a fascination with Africa that would last a lifetime. He was an British intelligence officer in World War I during the early part of the German East African campaign and later under Gen. Allenby in the Middle East. Between the wars he undertook covert missions to Nazi Germany and Russia. In World War II he was an O.S.S. agent. Contains several references to T.E. Lawrence, who met Meinertzhagen during the Arab Revolt and became friends after the war. [O'Brien F0187a] NOTE: I have copies in stock.

Guillaume, Renee & Andre AN INTRODUCTION AND NOTES. T. E. Lawrence's Seven Pillars of Wisdom; Surrey (England), The Tabard Press 1998: 1st in dj, 24 x 15.5cm, brown buckram, 274pp, set in 11.5pt Sabon on acid free paper, new. ** One of 500 numbered copies numbered 26 to 525. Translated from the French by Hilary Mandleberg. The Introduction consists of 68 pages, and is a short but useful resume of the military, political and literary background to Seven Pillars. Chapter headings include: Geopolitical Background: Chronicle of the Arab Revolt: Lawrence's Military and Political Work: Lawrence's Literary Work. (followed by 8 plus pages of notes and references) The Notes (or annotations) consist of 174 pages. They need to be read in conjunction with Jonathan Cape, 1935 edition of Seven Pillars (most later Cape editions are also suitable) or any Penguin edition. The Anchor Books, published by Doubleday, follows the same pagination as the Cape 1935 from page 29 onwards and so is also suitable to that extent. The extensive Notes are the result of the authors' close examination of the text, which surprisingly, has not been carried out (or at least published) in this detail before. Because of the density of Lawrence's book there are many facets which may require elucidation. For example there are frequent references, allusions and connotations in the text from literary and classical sources. The information provided gives the reader a fuller understanding of Seven Pillars, a book which Churchill described as one of the 'greatest books ever written in the English language'. About the authors Renée Guillaume graduated at the Sorbonne and for twenty years was a lecturer in English at the University of Orleans. André Guillaume was Professor of British and Irish Civilisations at the Sorbonne. Both have held teaching posts in Britain and have written and translated a number of books and articles on literary and historical subjects.
